The thing is it’s impossible to square the need to pardon your family out of fear of a lawless president with the need to attend his inauguration to preserve democratic norms. If you have to do the former there no longer are democratic norms.

One one hand he rightfully protects his family from the MAGA.
On the other he's respecting the office of the Presidency as a measure of his character.

Normal behaviour is not normal in abnormal times.
Trump didn't attend Biden's inauguration.
And Adams didn't attend Jefferson's, ftm.
Preserving "democratic norms" is a chosen albatross. And they are "Democratic norms" since the GOP doesn't follow them.
I don't think he should like try to block Trump assuming power or deliberatly muck up the process, but he doesn't need to pretend to be his friend and partner either.
