In '87 I went to the SB in NO (GB vs NE). At halftime most fans left their seats for food/bathroom breaks - very little cheering for the performers. But at home, watching the VHS of the broadcast, you'd think there were 200k fans screaming.

It's been ginned up with fake cheering for decades.

No, not really all good. After looking it up, I recall why no one cheered - nothing away from Jim Belushi, but the role belonged to John, so the reboot of the Blues Brothers didn't sit well. And in person you realize they are performing to the cameras - stadium crowd is an afterthought, sound-wise.

I knew I heard booing. I was actually surprised it wasn't much louder. Now I see why. How shameful of Fox to do this. I'll never watch the Super Bowl on Fox again. I'd rather miss it.

As a TV director myself, I had my suspicions. There's no way the supportive uproar we heard could have even materialized that quickly for how quick the shot was and how a natural "reaction delay" occurs through live stadium mics. Question: was this a Fox decision or were they ordered to by the WH?
