#dataviz #gis #maps folk. If you had to pick ONE map (OK max two) to show 16-17 y.o. students taking AP Human Geography what would you pick? My friend is a teacher and asked me for surprising, interesting, eye-opening maps (or other related viz).

- Minard's map + graphic of 'Losses in the Russian Campaign'
- John Snow's Cholera map
- Stick chart navigation maps used by the people of the Marshall Islands & Polynesia
- Election maps are always good..."land does not vote" and what not
- So many others!
100 times yes. I was considering all of these except the islanders maps, but you’ve convinced me. I also think this helps explain the true definition of a “map”. Thank you!
This from Kamil Galeev's "how did Russia get so big" essay really illustrates how impactful the railroad was - before trains were readily available, the only way to go anywhere long distance was over water, so the "obvious" passage through where it's warm was completely non-viable.

I should note these are USA/western students, so even "common" maps from other world views could be cool
