This is what we're seeing right now. The GOP has become an extremist party, going all in on narrowing its scope to a finely-tuned ideological stance. That stance, in this instance, is to the detriment of literally everyone else, but it doesn't matter. There is no real competition.

Because everyone who doesn't fit the ever-narrowing scope has to find a home somewhere else, and in a 2-party system, that means either disenfranchisement or joining the Other Party. Could a third party overthrow the GOP? Theoretically, sure, but not practically, not as things stand right now.

I say that as someone enrolled in a third party most of my adult life, by the way. They need support where they can get it, but I recognize none of them have a valid path to victory or realistic plan to get there. So I enrolled in one, but I rarely vote for them (basically never anymore).

So everyone not looking to join a third party has to join the Democrats. Which is fine, except that this puts too much pressure on the party to accommodate everyone it can. They could do it in a less spineless way, sure, but they are always forced to concede to a wide audience *somehow.*

SHOULD they fight harder? Yes, absolutely!

Does their role as the collection of everyone that isn't on board with GOP extremism allow them to fight effectively? No, not really.

They have to choose whether to alienate people desperate for a home or try to build their coalition.

This is not to say their hands are tied. They could, and should, do more. It is, however, an acknowledgment that we should not be surprised they are in the habit of conceding to dangerous voices. Their entire party structure is based around conceding. There is no other way to be a coalition party.
