A nonbinary person in Japan has filed a case at the Kyoto Family Court to have their family register changed so they will be listed as "first child" rather than "eldest daughter."

In their 40s, they obtained permanent residency in Canada, where there is more recognition for nonbinary identities. "When I told people I'm nonbinary, they immediately understood." But due to family matters they had to move back to Japan.
