I need to reread the Koseki laws. I hadn't realized they arent actually required to list people as 長女　長男 etc.

I don't know why the runners of things in Japan insist on foot-dragging on contemporary issues like this. Saying "first child" is an ideal way to indicate what a citizen wants to be recognized as, and the community should acknowledge that. In New Jersey, where J-business does a lot of $, no issue.

The person struggled since an early age with their gender.

In their 40s, they obtained permanent residency in Canada, where there is more recognition for nonbinary identities. "When I told people I'm nonbinary, they immediately understood." But due to family matters they had to move back to Japan.

Lawyer Shun Nakaoka says she's taking on the case not just for nonbinary people but for the sake of everyone, regardless of whether they're cis or trans, who doesn't want to be listed as "eldest daughter", "second son", etc. in the family register. She says a gender neutral notation should suffice.
