We can't grow tropicals here other than as annuals. The reason we spread them out throughout the garden is to get more caterpillars. Monarchs (and most butterflies) tend to lay an egg out two and fly off looking for another food plant.

I live in a Villa so I only have a small area along the of my villa front and on a small back patio... I have various types of tropical type of milkweed that are conducive to our Florida weather but the giant milkweed I find is the best
If we had them all grouped together we would get far fewer eggs laid in or garden space. So we spread them out in order to take advantage of their egg laying behavior. We're an urban garden and I'd love to say we're within a corridor of connected gardens...
But we're pretty much an island. So, we do what we can to maximize in our garden and then do a little guerilla gardening by distributing monarch seeds on crappy forgotten city lots. 😉
