I have sometimes seen unprotected bicycle lanes on these 45 mph frontage roads. Unsurprisingly, I have never see someone on a bicycle use them, because it is such a hostile environment for anyone who isn’t in a car.

The residential areas tend to have absolutely no sidewalks, clearly assuming the only way people would move around the neighborhood is in a car.

When I go running here, I nearly always have to drive to a park or trail, since it is simply not safe to run in the streets, and the stroads and highways form neigh impenetrable barriers to pedestrians and cyclists.

For example, the typical highway here carves a vast swath through the landscape, with a giant median, multiple lanes, high speed frontage roads that parallel the highway, and an endless corridor of box box stores and strip malls fronted by vast acres of parking.
