The US is a polyglot nation and always has been. The territory is home to hundreds of indigenous languages. As a nation of immigrants we have brought in speakers of languages from around the world. And we brought in more via territorial expansion: Hawaii, Alaska, and West of Appalachia.

Driving as part of a sedentary lifestyle has far higher risk than most people realize. A study in Scotland found that bike commuting has a 47% lower all cause mortality rate than driving. Our bodies are meant to move and biking to work is a great way to incorporate moderate exercise into your day.

NOAA has now been hijacked to spread misunderstanding of anthropogenic climate change. This Facebook post that was suggested to me is promoting a classic climate denier talking point.

A marathon runner’s life! I was in NYC for a short trip this past weekend. My weekly long run for my marathon training fell on a frigid sun-freezing Saturday morning. I bundled up in many layers and ran from 16th St to 143rd and back again on the Hudson River Greenway. Utterly delightful!

One thing I love about commuting by electric cargo bike is that it is so easy to stop by the supermarket to pick up a few things on the way home from work! #CargoBike #DTSJ

My daily run takes me past this staircase on the Guadelupe River Trail. I was addened when this small mural had been marred by graffiti, but I was absolutely delighted to see it has been recently restored. Thank you San Jose! #dtsj

If you enjoy live theater and you are in NYC or can get there, see Maybe Happy Ending! It is a fabulous and moving show, with amazing production design, and a bravura performance by Darren Criss in the leading role!

There is a lot going on in the US right now that is bringing me down. But I ride my bike to and from work every day, and that brings me some joy.

Ever ask yourself why so many climate scientists are also cyclists?

My first sighting of an Amazon electric cargo delivery bike, seen around 32nd St and 8th Avenue in Manhattan!

When traveling by relatively infrequent and expensive intercity modes like bus, train, or plane: do you prefer to arrive as close as possible to the scheduled departure time to minimize waiting time but risk occasionally missing a departure? Or do you prefer to plan arriving early and likely wait?

E-bikes flatten hills, calm headwinds, and lighten loads!

This is the Super Bowl ad I want to see! Thanks #TheWarOnCars! youtu.be/_0MVCyOjvtk?...

I just encountered the most extreme version of a #stroad I’ve ever seen, really more of a #streeway: Hwy 71 / Bastrop Hwy near Austin Airport. It looks and feels like a limited access freeway with 65 mph speed limit… and it has driveways and surface streets with stop signs directly accessing it!

As much as I may complain about car dependency where I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, I’m always reminded of how much worse it can be when I travel to visit my family in central Texas. Texas really goes all in on making cars the ONLY way to get around in many places.

Highway 1 along the California coast is one of the all time classic road trips, and Bixby Bridge near Big Sur is an iconic landmark on the trip, featured in countless car commercials symbolizing the freedom of the open road. I have taken this road trip one time. And it was on a bicycle!

It turns out, I live a short walk from the 10th Street Distillery, an award winning whiskey distillery located right here in the heart of downtown San Jose! If you are a whiskey fan, it is well worth stop for a tasting and/or a tour! Yet another reason I love urban living!

I’m very excited to have successfully registered for the 2025 Wine & Dine Half Marathon at Walt Disney World this fall. I’m even more excited to run a race with friends for the very first since I started running again more than a decade ago. I get to share the joy of waking up at 2am!

A new law went into effect on Jan 1 in California prohibiting parking within 20 feet of any marked or unmarked crosswalk and within 15 feet of crosswalks with curb extensions. The law applies even if the curb isn’t painted red or otherwise marked as prohibited. cal.streetsblog.org/2025/01/31/w...

Vision Zero works, if your city actually does the hard work of making the necessary changes to the transportation network that actually put safety first. Hoboken, NJ has done this, and has gone seven consecutive years without a traffic fatality. www.hobokennj.gov/news/city-of...

I just did the weekly grocery shopping for my family, and it felt perfectly easy, ordinary, and mundane. But because I did so using a bicycle, it simultaneously felt subversive and revolutionary.

If you rely on the Guadalupe River Trail between 101 and 237 in San Jose as a bicycle route, when the underpasses are flooded, the alternatives are not great.

Even on a rainy Northern California winter day, I still prefer biking to work over driving. My bike commute is always a consistent duration, regardless of the weather, while my car commute can be unpredictable, especially in bad weather. And with the right clothing, I stay dry and comfortable!

Roughly 30% of people in the US are unable to own and operate a car due to age, disability, money, or other factors Ensuring that walking, rolling, biking and transit provide viable transportation means that everyone has mobility, not just those with the privilege of a car and driver license.

I experienced Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at Disneyland last weekend for the first time. Overall I think they did a good job with the retheme. My only real complaint is the tension builds and releases built in to the track layout just don’t work as well with the new storyline.
