Probably worth pointing out that UKUSA would most likely allow the US government to access data about its own citizens that it would not otherwise be able to obtain without a court order. This would circumvent all Fourth Amendment protections and its global equivalents - without cause.

It says NSA is prohibited from asking. It doesn’t say prohibited from receiving. And since it only mentions NSA, that doesn’t preclude any other intelligence orgs or even the president himself making such a request.

See, that's why they needn't come back to the EU any time soon. Their membership was THE reason I never wanted Denmark to join the Judicial Union (or whatever its called) - they have a Gov/Monarch first tradition that is so far behind EU norm. Hey, I'm sure if the UK government forces Apple to make them hand over all the data they have on users, overriding the encryption, even for users outside the UK, China and Russia would *never* demand the same thing and then use it against people in the UK and elsewhere, including politicians..

Apple should just exit the UK market completely rather than comply. Its strongest competitive advantage is its PERCEIVED stronger stance on security and privacy. Taking a high profile stance on this far outweighs any lost sales in a relatively small market.
