A couple of points: 'patients' should indeed be kept for actual people, but it should also be kept for patients, not for healthy people participating in medical research or receiving preventive treatment

Also, past-tense statements are the most important for experimental papers but not necessarily for theory papers

Nice, will have a closer read ... and pass on to the grad student daughters :)

One nit: latex hate / quarto love feels misplaced. I have been writing in markdown only for maybe a decade. Some of it becomes webpages or sites, or pdf slides or papers. I would stress md/pandoc. Quarto is a wrapper.

Oh I need to rephrase this then. I love LaTeX, spent my whole career with it. But the last major release was 1994, and it shows. So wouldn't necessarily recommend learning its details to new students (e.g. fonts, floats, tables)

Yeah, latex within markdown is great (I don’t do a full derivation of mixture likelihoods in this one, but it was nice to know that I could still lay out equations 11 years after my defense 😉) and that’s the part people benefit from: https://trichelab.github.io/webR/mixtures/#mixture-models-the-math

That's just the engine. CTAN packages seem active, as is font development.

I, like you, have done latex since forever (very late 1980s, Uni Karlsuhe ...) and I know how it works when I need it. Yet pandoc faithfully turns my md into tex. And lets me add latex where needed. All rather nice really.
