Agree. I came to Cheers only at the very end of Shelly Long's run, so I never really gave her Diane a fair shot in comparison to the first three Rebecca seasons. But we rewatched the entire show last year, and she deserves her due for what she brought to Diane. Really great.
Even the sexual politics of the early seasons… so much of it revolves around decent guys performing misogyny to fit in and then, by inches, changing their behavior and reflecting on it.
Yeah, it's very much mocking the macho persecptive but, even into the later seasons, workplace sex antics are fundamental to the comedy.
It also has a very pro-tolerance gay episode in the second season, with an intolerant Norm leading a witch hunt. A few season later, he fakes gay for money.
