a friend of mine is cis but not straight but she did strongly consider her gender thoroughly before landing back on being fine with her assigned gender.

I think I can speak to that experience... But being a vanilla, middle-aged, progressive/ally open-minded hetero-so-far dad occasionally mentally/emotionally poking around and going "I wonder... eh... naah" shortly leads to assuming nobody cares and that it's not an interesting or engaging journey.

The act of giving it consideration is what makes it powerful, i think. The experience of investigating your own psyche to find where you're comfortable is an important one, even if you end up where you'd started.

Absolutely & that's a practice I want to instill in my kids (not explicitly towards sexuality but just life/interests/loves in general).

Most progressive parents I think try hard to be both accepting but non-pressuring, despite all the right-wing assumption of agendas and "indoctrination"

Teenagers are so clearly in a place of desperation for identity and a clarified self and I'm always wanting to go "slooooww down, don't lock yourself in, don't insist so hard you know thyself just because you so badly want to know thyself..."

But I do suspect that a few intensely-felt declarations and self-obsessions that might end up being rejected or at least questioned later are just part of the knowing-thyself process, so part of the acceptance is letting a teenager you're supporting go super hard at something.
