I presume that same thing happened to others in that group as well.
Understanding the source does not mean accepting or forgiving the monstrosity, though.

Sadly, I had to cut off my bestie. We have known each other since we were 2. We are 59. I am absolutely heartbroken. The reality is, it's too important. Told her if she supports him she is a Nazi. She cried & said how I could call her that. I cried asking how could she, as a "Christian" support him.

I think it really is as simple as ‘this is who they were’. It was always there, just hidden until someone came along and told them it was ok to be that person.

Good article. I think we all have people in our lives like this. For me, it's my former police officer son. Some days it's difficult to have a normal conversation with him without breaking down and crying.

THIS! When Trump mocked that disabled reporter, Serge, during the 2015 primary and people laughed. Or they knew it was awful but ignored it. It was shocking. They were outraged by emails but this was somehow OK and it's never stopped. Thanks for putting it into words.
