They already are as their country is in Central America. America is a continent, not a country. One country in North America is called United States OF America. In Italian we have the word 'statunitense' to refer to USians.
Consider that ‘America’ is an artificial construct. You live on stolen and are currently poorly governed by an elderly nutcase.
The world has renamed you Dumfukistan, your citizens are Dumfukistani.
This change will be observed until order and good government are restored.
Mexicanadian.
About time the two great North American nations did away with that unnecessary buffer zone in the middle and declared the Republic of MexiCan America
Either way - in the interest of regional goodwill and inclusion, I propose renaming that body of water by the southern states (formally Mexico) the Gulf of Cuba.
Mexicans, Canadians, Central & S. Americans are Americans & always have been. People from the United States ("of America" solely designates the *continent) are also. Most Mexicans are indigenous to the continent. They're Native. They predate "America." & That gulf is called Chalchiuhtlicueyecatl.
Chalchiuhtlicueyecatl is the original Nahuatl name of those waters, which are int'l not ours to rename. Chalchiuhtlicue is the reportedly fierce goddess whose turf that is. I'm told by shore locals there's been a ceremony to invoke her. I hope she floods DC. A nice curvy tsunami, turn N at Miami...
I am an us citizen born but I still refer to my self as mexican. My family literally has their last name on a road on our maps and I still know we're not a real American and never will be. So I'll always be proud to be mexican lol
Btw, I live in the US, and was raised by teachers. So that's why I sound like a teacher. Pardon. Most people seem to no longer know this. But the rest of the world does know. They didn't defund education in half their areas. & When magas started saying 'Murican... Well, Eek. That's why.
We've been sharing those maps for years. Don't get mad. It's important to know this. It's confusing to wonder why we have to share it, though. Places have official names, which have meanings. So, we're letting you know, so you don't sound red in public.
That's bc they don't know what a prepositional phrase is. The country, the United States, is OF America. It isn't America. Of: it's IN America. America is 2 continents & the islands around them, aka The Americas, bc it's more than one land mass. This is 3rd grade geography, man. Come on!
Yes, but being US-born Hispanic, I know a lot of Latin American people who feel clumped in with the US when people refer to ‘America.’ They’d rather broad statements about the US be more specific. So yes, it is perspective. I think there are ways to honor both.
I think we’re kind of saying the same thing, and I agree that most US Americans don’t think of anything but the US as America. I appreciate the civil debate.
Thank you. I’ve been asking myself for years why anyone outside of the U.S. would even want to call themselves American considering what using that demonym would imply (nothing good). North American, sure. South American, also yes. I wish I were Canadian. I hate it here.
I'm frequently saddened by how little American children learn about the world beyond their own border. 😔
North America typically refers to Canada, USA, and Mexico, but technically includes Central America as a subregion. South America starts at Venezuela and Columbia.
It’s very sad. Incuriosity rife among Americans of all ages and it, among other things, is part of the reason the U.S. is falling to fascism right now. We were poor but my Grammie liked to dream of travel and ingrained that in me. I was lucky in that I suppose.
Thank you for sharing this. In terms of demonym, however, would anyone not from the U.S. really want to be called American, considering our bloody history and fascist present? If I were any other nationality from within the Americas, I would certainly not want to be mistaken for an American.
The operative word is what WE are taught. The root of this discussion was a claim that all citizens of this continent call themselves American. And that is wrong.
Btw, I thought your original post was very witty. I assume it wasn't intended to be a geography lesson. 😉
I had a great friend who was a leftist from Oaxaca and when he was up here any time he’d hear someone say “America,” regarding the US he’d twitch and wind up. That was always a fun 15 minutes
USA residents are Americans, Canadians are Americans, Mexicans are Americans... you're an American and you're an American! Well North American to be exact.
But seriously, if you speak with any Latin American they look at us crazy when we call ourselves Americans. They view the Americas as one continent. Ergo, we are all Americans.
They always were. It's a testament to our arrogance as United States citizens to say we are the only Americans. The Americas are a continent, both North and South. For that matter the people of Chile are Americans, South American.
Well, lots North/South America (besides Canada) self-refer as "American"-as in "from the American continent(s)". First time I heard it, I was surprised, but it makes sense. Many of Latin American/Hispanic descent consider themselves American. Since Google has renamed the Gulf, it should be expected.

They are Americans. They live on the continent of North America. Just as much as us, Canadians, Colombians, Peruvians, Argentieans, Brazilians, etc. We are all Americans.

Might be insulting for them right now.
My father is of Spanish descent, and my mother, now deceased, was of Mexican origin. He will turn 96 in six days.
My ethnicity is Mexican American. There is NO Hispanic race. I identify as Caucasian.

And we don’t have time, interest or resources for mass cult deprogramming.
We're not Worthy of statehood .
Thanks but no thanks donny.
Too many people arguing this point from both sides. It all depends on where you're from.
For people who are from the "USA," America refer to the country, not the continent.
I think it's more about just understanding "Americans" don't think of both continents as "America," much less as one continent.
The continent is called North America.
FFS.

So they are Americans.
You...are not America.
They are racially loyal to Mexico first.
