I personally would also recommend the Striezelmarkt in Dresden and the one in Frankfurt. All three places have good connections by high speed trains (ICE).

I’d say fly into Munich or Frankfurt. If Munich, stay and check some of the Christmas markets in town. Get a train from either city to Nuremberg, which is the most famous Christmas market in a medieval setting.

Close to Nuremberg is Rothenburg, which is a small and well-preserved medieval town (probably best example in Germany), with a very pretty Christmas market.

💯 for Rothenburg. We stayed in the historic area “inside the walls” of the old city and it was like being in a fairy tale. Great market.

If approaching from the direction of Frankfurt, Würzburg is also lovely

There is definitely a train station there- that’s how we got there. It just requires a transfers at one of the larger towns in the region.

I've only been to a handful of German cities, but Munich is great and certainly worth a visit -- especially the beer halls, which I imagine are splendid at Christmas time

Definitely give Dresden a close look! It’s got the oldest continuously running Christmas Market in the world. Plus, you’ll find almost the entire “old town” (well, it’s only been rebuilt a couple of years back, but..) transformed into a Christmas Market (it’s more than one but they’re everywhere)

Another Christmas Market renown for it being particularly beautiful and different to many would be Esslingen, a town close to Stuttgart. It’s pretty much a “medieval” Christmas market. Another one that’s very special would be situated in the Ravenna Gorge in the Southern Black Forest,

though, unfortunately, it has recently been discovered by influencers.. but it’s pretty unique for its stunning location.
