I already bemoaned the exercise of EoY lists (hilariously right before this came out) but journalists understand making it necessarily leaves deserving folks out.

We got lucky with timing, and I'm really grateful that our last week has been what it is, but I'll try to update with some thoughts as they arise.

First, and most obviously, Yazeba's Bed & Breakfast. Our whole book starts from hearing the YB&B pitch and going "you can DO THAT in a TTRPG BOOK?"

Mothership's 2024 edition also deserves a spot here if D&D 2024 does, I think, and right now that's causing a huge sea change (and has worked so hard to boost its community creations) and has generated an enormous amount of creative energy, even this year alone.

I am so grateful for this, and I think the folks who have worked with me on the game absolutely deserve it, too. I also think it's a very well-composed spread of books considering the challenge of doing something like this in tabletop! It's truly wild to have our first game next to D&D lol

More stuff to consider if you're excited for us: @plusoneexp.bsky.social has been doing an amazing experiment with their Zine Club that has led to several BRILLIANT writers getting published for smaller games to a wide audience out the gate, a huge boon to the entire community.

If I'm saying "community" a lot, it's because: in many ways, our game was set on a track to do well because I was able to watch these folks work, ask them questions, and build a plan based on what did and didn't work for them. That doesn't happen without an open community and generosity from them.

I've had a few questions over the last week that boil down to: "how did you make something this polished and prepared for your first game/campaign/etc.?" And there are two answers. One is that I asked EVERYBODY for advice and I listened to it all. The other is that @shilly.co is a straight up genius

I have a hard time taking seriously any "best" list that includes D&D and Pathfinder, both of which, while fine, are tremendously overrated. Glad to see them recognizing Triangle Agency, but like you say, there are many other games that deserve nods, too.

Putting D&D and Pathfinder on this list is like having a table with burgers from everywhere. Red Robin, Smashburger, Fatburger, those super-fancy $200-a-plate places, and still going for McDonalds and Burger King. Just the most bland, boring possible options.

I think it's super hard to juggle your opinions & job & the wide spread of a space like this with, also, an understanding of your website's audience. Also, occasionally, including big names like this can mean it's shared by them to show folks other creators in a roundabout way

I mean, on an intellectual level, I get it, but Wizards and Paizo have been sucking all the oxygen out of the room for decades at this point, and I just wish there was a little more market share to go around for all the smaller devs, and I'm bein' a grouchy old man about it.
