Incredibly important! But sadly no. At the moment the USA is on my list of countries I would be unsafe travelling to for fieldwork and I don't know enough to give meaningful advice for how you can avoid anything your government is trying to do. Sorry. It's awful.
For all the times America has helped others... we're screaming for help and because of trumputin.... no one is lifting a finger. Just watching it happen and fretting.
This is a nice resource for group trips. I am surprised by the emphasis on reporting though- where, when, to whom would that actually be constructive? I do f/w solo in the developing world and this is completely outside my experience
Thanks! Reporting can be both formal and informal. We found that researchers wanted more support from home institutions, especially when travelling alone. Reporting can also be back to a PI or other coworker more informally, with an emphasis on support through allyship and reduced isolation
I think the key thing here is that there should be a route to reporting LGBTQ+ specific issues which will be taken as seriously and acted upon in the same way as other field safety issues. Researchers should know that someone has their back.
LGBTQ+ researchers face unique challenges in the field. One key finding from our last project, creating resources for safe, inclusive and equitable fieldwork more generally, was that individual groups also needed bespoke guidance to support specific issues. https://inclusivefieldwork.leeds.ac.uk/guidelines/
To explore key issues and potential solutions for LGBTQ+ fieldworkers, our team (@zebracki.bsky.social, me, Fiona Gill, Sam Wimpenny, @cscottwatson.bsky.social, and Helena Brown) have run a series of focus groups with field workers at @universityofleeds.bsky.social and @rgsibg.bsky.social.
We have been excited to work with @niftyfoxcreative.bsky.social and Motus TV to turn the results of our focus groups for LGBTQ+ inclusive fieldwork into a series of professional guidance documents and summary videos.
A 1-page summary and a 3-page leaflet of our PRIDE Guidelines for LGBTQ+ inclusive fieldwork are available at https://inclusivefieldwork.leeds.ac.uk/pride. We recommend that the single page can be shared as flyers or posters, while the leaflet can function as a guide to more thoughtful fieldwork planning π³οΈβππ³οΈββ§οΈ
Our first LGBTQ+ inclusive fieldwork video highlights the current state of inclusivity and the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ field researchers. It includes several direct quotes from the experiences of our focus groups π§ͺππ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHw2afZfhv0
Our second LGBTQ+ inclusive fieldwork video highlights inclusive change and the ways we can drive positive change for LGBTQ+ researchers. π§ͺππ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1TiNwMIMSo
A big thank you to our Inclusive Fieldwork Team, especially @canopyrobin.com for their stellar work, and to our project participants and creative collaborators without whom these resources would not have seen the light. Hereβs looking forward to shaping inclusive fieldwork journeys further

Kinda important for all #texans.
This is currently a eugenics war right now.
