It's a planetary feedback driving SST's between the upper ocean and atmosphere - one expression of it is that the coupling increases due to marine heatwaves...

Ocean heat uptake involvedin various way's - SOx just helped to breach thresholds...

Presumably the deep ocean - which has been slowly but surely warming due to our greenhouse gas addiction - is replenishing heat in the ocean surface much faster and much more effectively due to the extreme heat content?
