My desire in life is to pet the big cats without getting mauled to death.

Get a Bombay. They are basically a panther scaled down to 9 pounds. I had one and I still miss him. Fastest cat I've ever seen. I would say that if you could line up all the neighborhood cats and race them down the street, Sunshine would beat them all by 5 yards. And he went up trees like a rocket.
