Given this nudge to 'get a move on with HS2' Can I suggest some improved connections are added East & West to the Elizabeth Line?
You can stray only a few miles away from the Elizabeth line & find there is no direct transport links to it's stations.

Also the Crossrail project was delayed by Thatcher's and Major's Tory governments so the Elizabeth Line could have been completed around 10 years sooner!

Some of the few rail upgrades there have been in Cornwall over the last couple of decades were directly funded by the EU. For example the line from Truro to Falmouth. Result - more frequent trains and massively increased usage.

For all his faults, I'm confident that if Osborne had remained Chancellor or became PM, we'd be on track for full fat HS2, East West Rail would be electrified, Manc Piccadilly would be completing platforms 15 and 16 this year, and Northern Powerhouse Rail would be under construction.

Agreed. At least he had the common sense to see that infrastructure upgrades are expensive but necessary if the country is to move forward. Everyone screaming about how the Euston-Birmingham line (WCML) should've been widened clearly have failing memories... what killed Railtrack? The WCML upgrade.
