Why should that matter. If the laws are set, social media needs to meet them. It's not the Govt who needs to enable social media. If their business model doesn't fit then fck off. That's their problem.
Really?
I think the idea is this - you will make your myID (so put your driver's licence/ppt/Medicare) in that.
Next year they roll out a trust exchange type service where third parties request verification through the exchange, instead of capturing the documents themselves.
I reckon if it was voluntary I would totally do it as a sign in option over the constant password needing to be 10 characters with a swirl etc etc thing.
But forcing this instantly on everyone who wants to have a scroll is really full on.
They will be forced to require an age verification for anyone trying to access it in Australia if the legislation banning under 16s from using it passes.
It's useless legislation that gifts social media barons more wealth and power, without doing anything about their bastards inc algorithms causing the damage.

So you'll still have to hand over your ID, just not WHEN using socmed, but prior to. Talk about semantics! You can tell she used to be a lawyer! #ageban
All we need is for all our private data to go directly to these online platforms and then find ourselves under the spell of a grubby company like Cambridge Analytical.
This problem can be trivially solved technically. The government creates a new authentication service (*cough* myGov *cough*) that users have to authenticate woth during signup. Tthis service returns a "yes this person is over 18" or not - and no other information. Private and age-enforced

Not a bad solution if so. Allows for verification without handing over ID.
I still have issues that it removes true anonmyity from the web, but unsure if the pros outweigh the cons.
It's such a shame it's getting tested upon the whole country in such a maddeningly ad hoc manner.

Let’s make platforms play bouncer at the club waving through those that look old enough to enter.
Also…just an aside….don’t we have signs up at every bottle shop / tobacco shop that state….if you don’t look 25 you’ll need ID?
