I should try Notre Dame again, couldn’t jive with it but I love love Les Mis.
Also, you need to try Last Day of a Condemned Man, it’s only a novella but damn it hits hard, and one of the side characters is basically a draft form of Valjean. I think I might like it more than Les Mis.
That's awesome. I remember enjoying Hunchback a lot, it was also way more sexual than I expected from the 19th century and also have wondered about taking on Les Miserables. Also as someone whose first cassette purchase was Full Moon Fever I love your username.
I still want to read the unabridged les mis--an abridged version was required reading in 9th grade and I loved it (but was also already deep in hunchback-sauce so I mean of course I loved it)

notre dame takes a good chunk of time to really get going, but once it does, it’s amazing
the opening scenes in The Man Who Laughs haunt me to this day, he’s got such a gift
