This thread has been helpful in reminding me about the buffer/de-buffer technique. I recently needed to do some generalization that it'll be great for, but for whatever reason, the technique didn't come to mind, even though I had just used it last week on another project. Now I remember what to try!

The “Aggregate Polygons” tool dealt with the former, but I was still facing manual editing for the latter.

My laptop grinds to a halt trying to export all this.
Just run one buffer with a positive distance, then another buffer on the result with a negative distance, and hey presto!
Then just run the “Eliminate Polygon Part” to get rid of any small holes.
