Witnessed a little bit of history today, as the RNZAF landed one of their retired C-130 Hercules on the grass outside the Air Force Museum of New Zealand. Though it’s a former airfield, it closed 16 years ago, and is now mainly a housing estate, with the main road built along the old runway.

Do you want me to stop or not?! If you’re going to put up a sign saying “NO STOPPING”, don’t make it the shape and colour of the universally recognised STOP sign.

Today was a mountain kind of day

A #map of maps. I decided I needed a better way of cataloguing all the maps I've made in my day job. I created a script to go through my entire projects folder, extract the extent of every map, and add it to a dataset with with its filename and a link to its location. There's almost 500 of them!

That terrible leading just adds insult to injury... Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)

Just had an argument with the pub quizmaster. Q: How many of NZ’s 13 National Parks are on the South Island? A (per QM): 10; there’s 3 on the North Island Me: But 1 of those 10 is on Stewart Is.; there’s 9 on the South Is. QM: Well there’s 10 on my South Is. map Me: Which also shows Stewart Is…

In mountain-renaming news from this side of the planet… Not only has the colonial name Mt Egmont been officially removed in favour of te reo Māori name Taranaki Maunga, but the mountain has also been made a legal person, giving it the same rights as you or I. Ka rawe! www.bbc.com/news/article...

I’ve always been reluctant to post anything non-mappy on my South Arrow Maps account. Back on The Other Place I had a separate account for that sort of thing. Maybe I’ll branch out a bit more here. This was my Wednesday evening, running the sound desk for Sofar Sounds second ever Christchurch gig

I was having a serious bout of head-scratching and facing hours – HOURS I tell you – of data processing and manual editing. Then I remembered this trick from @johnnelsonmaps.bsky.social, and all is well with the world. youtu.be/oFn4i0__3Vk

From the display boards of the NACIS map gallery in Tacoma, to the wall of my lounge in Christchurch, I’ve finally got round to framing and hanging Daniel Huffman’s (@pinakographos.bsky.social) Terrain Lines print of Aoraki/Mt Cook. Ooh. Aah. Nice.

Beautiful hand drawn maps by J.R. Nolan. in an unexpected book. Anyone know who this cartographer is/was?

Paging @kennethfield.bsky.social and @transitmap.net Also, if anyone wants to make something similar for me, I’ve got the perfect location to hang it on my wall

It’s a #MapsOnDrinks twofer! On the front, the Basalt Wines logo formed from the contour lines of Tower Hill (Koroitj) volcano near Warrnambool. On the back, a simple line drawing of the south Victoria coast. Yesterday I drove the Great Ocean Road, and today I saw the koalas in Tower Hill reserve

Christmas Eve #MapsInTheWild on the Puffing Billy Railway in Melbourne. I wandered across this a few times and didn’t give it much thought. Then I realised it’s a minimalist map of the railway, just marking the line and the stations. A great map, but also a fantastic experience riding the train!

I've rediscovered the joys of Bernie Jenny's Terrain Bender, so I'm playing around with some bending of the Southern Alps for a potential new project. Just the default hypsometric tint and depth map for now while I tweak the settings. Then I'll export out the edited DEM and bring it into Blender.

Hi. I'm Andrew. I own New England's oldest map store because last year I moved across the country after an old guy retired and gave it to me Willy Wonka-style. Visit my store in Rhode Island. www.mapcenter.com

Reaching into the archives, here’s another #map of #London. #climateChange #seaLevelRise

Did my first triathlon today, and Strava decided to log it as a 25km open water swim, so I *had* to make my own map splitting the three disciplines. 🔵 750m swim 🔴 20km bike 🟡 5.7km run

Rotation angles should follow the compass and I will be hearing no other arguments

Things I like: when I apply a rotation number to a graphic and it rotates in the direction I hoped it would. I like it because it's so rare.

I hate almost everything about these maps. 🤮 Rainbow colour ramp for elevation 🤮 Continuous colour ramp, but discrete legend 🤮 Non-linear stretch to elevation 🤮 Unrounded values in legend 🤮 Terrain colour just dumped on top of basemap
