But also, if that comparison ends up as risotto fodder, I’m intrigued by the cartographic metaphor for wines so bad they get poured down the sink…

It was a real spectacle! Luckily a friend in the know gave me enough warning to allow me to get there in time

The final landing was the second attempt, after thumping the ground on the first attempt and performing a go-around

Curious about why you photograph the maps to digitise them, rather than scan them? Is it just a question of them being larger than any available scanner, or is it a quality/colour decision?

Just happens to be where most of my map requests come from!

Thanks! I actually chose it because it’s one of our corporate colours!

It’s hard to make a bad map of this part of the world, though many have tried.

Not for my day job, as I work for Land Information New Zealand!
I work almost exclusively in ArcGIS Pro in that job. Sometimes I need to use Illustrator for more refined cartography, but those maps would probably still be included in this as I do all the data prep in ArcGIS Pro first.

Can confirm it's now appearing (terribly) as an alternative name when viewed from New Zealand

I've just enjoyed an hour and a half of "professional development" catching up on Daniel's latest Live Carto from last week (as watching live at 9am on a Saturday morning was never going to happen for me...)

I’m going to start a petition to actually have NZ intentionally *removed* from a map.

I used to be a sound engineer while at university (before I even knew what Gee-Eye-Ess was), but haven’t done it in ages. Luckily it all came flooding back to me!

Luckily the double-offset generalisation trick also works with the “Buffer” tool.
Just run one buffer with a positive distance, then another buffer on the result with a negative distance, and hey presto!
Then just run the “Eliminate Polygon Part” to get rid of any small holes.

Double offset symbology works a treat, but I’ve got soooo many layers, each with a different blend mode:
• coloured outline
• shadow 1
• shadow 2
• blurred gradient stroke
• coloured fill
My laptop grinds to a halt trying to export all this.

I’ve got 1000’s of land parcels, each divided by roads/rivers a few metres wide. Sometimes these split the land entirely, while others just wind their way into the land and come to a dead end.
The “Aggregate Polygons” tool dealt with the former, but I was still facing manual editing for the latter.

Applying this to many layers really impacts the export time!

Also framed and hung today: an NZMS1 map of Broken River that I picked up from GeoCart’2024 in Wellington last year. It’s now on the wall of my dining room.
