I don't disagree with anything but imo the problem isn't really SUD but a larger issue of scholars chronically looking for shortcuts. Establishing a phenomenon in a slow decades-long process & modern academia just isn't well-suited for that

Interesting to read that a lot behavioral addictions are defined in terms of quantity-frequency to try and be more like substance use disorder, when, in fact, quantity-frequency is not an explicit part of substance use disorder diagnosis

To the extent that there are diagnoses, they are defined by functional impairment, officially; but in most of the literature frequency is often equated with addiction

The themes are understandable because behavioral addiction researchers have struggled for recognition as legitimate over the past few decade. Psychiatry and clinical science were, historically, not welcoming subfields for folks studying gambling, compulsive sexual behavior, or other behaviors

yet, substance research has flourished. Ergo, if you can convince the right people that behavioral addictions are of the same kind and quality as substance use disorders, then maybe behavioral addictions will also flourish.

Behavioral addictions are likely *not* addictions in the same sense that substance use disorders are. Ideas around dependence, withdrawal, tolerance, and similar physiological processes do not, can not, and should not be uncritically applied to behavioral addictions.

Nice article. I’m a little sad you didn’t mention my critique of arguing by analogy, as a form of Valley Girl Science. “Like, behavioral addictions are real because they’re like substance addictions!” Behavioral addictions need their own underlying theory which can then be tested.
