If you're keeping track of the long list of things this admin's done that flies in the face of MAHA, censoring and ultimately losing the top intramural nutrition scientist studying food processing and health is definitely towards the top.

This right here. Spreading "perfect victim" or "innocence" narratives is dangerous and cedes ground on the fact that *all* people deserve dignity, humane treatment, and access to due process. Feeding into perfect victim or innocence narratives isn't just irresponsible messaging, it is copaganda.

Repeat after me: these deportations have nothing to do with foreign policy. There is a paid contract with El Salvador. Effectively we are paying for private prison services. Nothing to do with foreign policy. The administration is lying in order to commit grave injustices.

It works. The government here largely works. Because we are so spoiled by how well it works, we are letting a fool convince us it is broken.

this is completely nuts.... DOGE wants to audit all independent nonprofits that receive federal grants. for one, there are probably thousands; secondly, under what possible authority can the government go into nonprofits internal systems without a warrant related to a crime?

WaPo op-ed: Colleges and universities are among America’s most competitive international exporters. In dollar terms, last year, the United States sold more educational services to the rest of the world than it sold in natural gas and coal combined. wapo.st/4luJyph

more bizarro evil...

Explain to me why encroaching on the second amendment is not allowed even when children’s lives are at stake but the first amendment is easily eroded when someone simply disagrees with our President.

We've reached the point in our descent into fascism where the Jewish governor's house getting firebombed on Passover by a guy trying to bash his head in with a sledgehammer is overshadowed by the story of the President saying he wants to build foreign gulags for US citizens.

how is this anything other than evil? America regularly failed to live up to its ideals, but so many of us have lived our lives trying to do so... www.npr.org/sections/goa...

only the most free thinking business genius would try to undercut the market monopoly enjoyed by PhD candidates making $240,000+/year

Note to fellow journos: If only one "economist" agrees w Trump tariffs—as evidenced by fact that this particular "economist" is now being interviewed and cited everywhere as only "expert" willing to publicly defend them—consider confirming that he's actually an "economist." Check CVs, for example.

technology, the cause of and cure for cognitive problems ;-)

straight up evil.... (however, presumably if it becomes American property, they would have to obey American laws, so not sure how that would even make sense in their creating of loopholes to get around law).

... one of the groups that got this money is part of a notorious anti-drug foundation that once ran a hideously abusive chain of teen rehabs called Straight Inc. .... drug war & corruption have long been linked.

A couple weeks ago after one of my many “publish locally!” rants, I started corresponding with this author about writing for her dads local paper in Montana. Just a perfect example of the form: www.boulder-monitor.com/featured_con...

The fundamental legal reason immigrants can be expelled with few protections (no Gideon right to an attorney, less due process, etc.) is that deportation and removal are considered "regulatory" and not "punitive" actions. That distinction collapses when they are sent directly to a prison.

Also very strange - I haven’t read a lot of statement from elected and/or political elites today expressing concern about anti semitism today. Wonder why?

Not even 100 years ago. Middle of last century. I have a buddy in his early 80s who grew up in Iowa and he said that as a kid, "sometimes kids just died" from now preventable illnesses. His childhood was marked with the deaths of classmates.

what the.........??????????????

nice to see scientists in the addictions field speaking up.. we need more of this...

How to help fight against the heartbreaking loss of our collective knowledge. We are being robbed.

3 days ago RFK Jr. told the CDC to stop recommending water fluoridation, claiming it was a neurotoxin (this is a lie). Turns out he also just eliminated the CDC’s entire Lead Program, and now lead poisoned children in Milwaukee are just on their own. Lead IS a neurotoxin and harms brain development

Can someone explain why purging libraries has anything to do w/ whether race can be used as part of decision making in hiring or admissions? This stuff is not only illegal censorship, but also plainly racist & has nothing to do with court decisions on DEI, which are about hiring & admissions.

these universities failed billionaires so hard that they... became billionaires? they failed science so hard that the US leads in discovery & Nobel prizes, they failed culture so hard that the US leads in many areas.... wt everloving fuck?????

This is great progress, but I wonder how the Trump Administration's Executive Orders to make fossil fuels great again (and limit climate action at all levels of governance) will affect these trends...

this is 100% it. The diagnostic criteria have dramatically changed since I was a kid. We know this, we've known this.

Great news: NIH postbac program is recruiting again! If your grad school plans were affected by program cutbacks or admissions freezes this year I highly encourage you to apply, this could be a perfect opportunity. Please repost. www.training.nih.gov/research-tra...

I don't understand how any businessperson could have thought that having this guy in charge was a good idea. Instability, lack of rule of law are KNOWN to damage economies...the reason people invest here is because there's less of that. throw that away & all the tax cuts in the world won't help.

It’s amazing that things like cutting FDA funding are never framed as, “I think private companies should be able to profit from having you literally eat shit and you shouldn’t be able to do anything about it”

If you ever have the opportunity to fly Avelo Airlines—don’t.

Published an op-ed for @cnn.com: “Nobel laureate: I owe America my success. Today, its scientific future is in danger.” A personal reflection on what’s at stake as science funding gets slashed. I’d be grateful if you could amplify both in and beyond the science world. www.cnn.com/2025/04/09/h...

I'm calling for an investigation into whether President Trump manipulated the market to benefit his Wall Street donors—all while working people and small businesses paid the price. Did Trump help insiders cash in on his tariff flip-flopping? It sure looks like corruption.

Question for scientists 🧪: There’s been a lot of criticism of NIH from rightwing hacks, often about how NIH doesn’t support high-risk work. What are some examples of high-risk work NIH has supported recently? Please reply here, DM, or msg on Signal.

you don't want to know how gross & poisonous food was before the FDA.... but we might be about to find out... great @deborahb.bsky.social www.nytimes.com/2025/04/09/o...

it feels so great when you stop banging your head on a wall... but that doesn't mean banging your head on the wall is a great pain relief measure... jeez....
