Not even 100 years ago. Middle of last century. I have a buddy in his early 80s who grew up in Iowa and he said that as a kid, "sometimes kids just died" from now preventable illnesses. His childhood was marked with the deaths of classmates.

i don't think most people today have any real idea what things like child mortality pre-vaccines really meant.
i have friends who have lost two children. they have been permanently altered by that experience.
that was basically everyone until 100 years ago.

Mother of how many children?
How many children survived?
It's both informative and very sad.
I grew up with a kid who was deaf from menningitis, and a granny who was a polio survivor. I was born in 63.
Between that and polio, my parents were 10000000% behind vaccines.

We tend to get specific about animal fats. Except for duck. That we just call duck fat.
Very glad that's not literally 1/4 of the population anymore like it was 80 years ago
It's traumatic to watch, and at https://player.bfi.org.uk/free/film/watch-apaches-1977-online if DRM/geoblocking don't get in your way.
We had a meningitis outbreak in my city when I was in Grade 11 and they mounted a mass vaccination campaign within the week.
We don't know how good we have it.
It was my first intro to “why we get vaccines” when I was small - and it wasn’t until later that I learned he was the lucky one of his friends. He lived.
In the summertime, when everyone slept out in their screen porches, they’d hear his coughs & labored breathing.
Then one night, they didn’t. 😔
My mother got measles in the 1970s in her twenties, and was not only incredibly sick but then got pneumonia months later bc measles suppresses yr immune system for like a year.

That's just our fam. There's a million stories just like it.
Spouse is 12 yrs younger, he did not get smallpox vax in school. (He did get it as part of the suite of required military vax but that was as an adult.)
I’m gonna laugh a little that gay men are most protected here if the Russians tried to use smallpox as a bio weapon.
Also somewhere I’ve got the list of which surface disinfectants are best against mpox and how long a kill time they require (Lysol liquid is a good retail one but IIRC kill time is like 10min)
So if smallpox comes back, I'm screwed...
his illness destroyed my dad’s family. all the other kids were farmed out to distant relatives so my grandparents could concentrate on my uncle. the family never came back together
This was in the 1910s i think
She is pro-vaccine and has all her boosters.
And have you walked in a graveyard in a section from before vaccines, the 50s or before? There's so many children💔
Lambs were popular for a while. But marble is vulnerable to acid rain and they look like melted soap blobs now.
