This book has appeared so often in the past few days, and I'm taking it as a sign. Now revisiting #HouseOfLeaves. Have you read it? And does it haunt you like it does me

years ago I started it and it creeped me out. Then, half way though, it just- disappeared. Felt so weird about it, I never bothered looking for it again. My son is giving it a shot. He said he is taking it in in short bursts...
Funnily enough, this one didn't have much of an impact on me. That's entirely on me, though. My friends said it was one of the scariest they ever read.
I tend to think it's because I read a lot of horror and not much frightens me. Also, when the text started going nonlinear I got a bit lost (which is, I suppose, the point). I enjoyed it but it failed to convince me. Most of my friends disagree with me on this.
It’s quite an undertaking, for sure! If you’ve not already, I highly recommend “Haunted” by Poe (aka Ann Danielewski, Mark’s sister). It’s a concept album that acts as a therapeutic examination of her relationship w/their father, Tad, including excerpts from recorded “letters”. BRILLIANT album!
I revisit it every now and then because I'll forget why it bothered me so, and then when I reread I remember why I had said I wasn't going to reread it last time. Tbh though I still don't fully understand some of the footnotes and Zampano/Truant chapters & how it fits with Will N.'s story.
There's a certain scene involving Tom Navidson that I think about all the time. Really want to read the teleplays that Mark Z. Danielewski wrote for a proposed TV adaptation. I only read the first one but I really enjoyed it.
I did enjoy the book so I’m definitely willing but I’m now a little worried that I need to reread the book to catch myself up because it’s been so long
I was hoping someone would bring up the remedyverse!! Just finished the Alan Wake II DLC and I can't wait for the Control sequel. "The Oldest House" is so HOL inspired. Love the atmosphere and lore of those games
YESSS!!! i remember reading it and being like "hm okay i can see the impression it's made on alan wake" but reading it kept making me think about control!
when i finished reading it, i tried to pick up another book and ended up abandoning it for another go at HOL, it had its hooks in me for a WHILE.
I know the feeling! It feels like a mystery you can dig at forever. Also, unrelated, but I see that Reach is your fav Halo game which is a big hell yeah from me
An absolute masterpiece! If *this* one crosses your path repeatedly, it's not just a sign, it's a clear nudge ... and it won't stop showing up until it has kickstarted a creative process.
Every time I saw it on my hubby's reading stash, magic was about to happen. :)
Yeah totally! I e never played MyHouse but watched a play though and it seemed really cool. Have you gotten into the backrooms lore too? The Kanepixels YouTube vids are great
Man they're killer! He's a kid from Thunder Bay who started making the vids in blender when he was like 15. They're excellent and really capture the vibe of the backrooms
Yes!! I've never played MyHouse but I watched a playthrough and it definitely captures some of the liminal nature of House Of Leaves mixed with The Backrooms. Both play with the eeriness of familiar but impossible spaces
Fascinating.Literal page turner of a book. Whenever I would recommend this book I would suggest they approach 7 pages at a time so as not to miss anything with the back and forth, footnotes, etc . And then I would recommend Poe's Haunted album https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_lhspmjCJ4

Also I'm just such a sucker for strange geometry.
It’s so much
I'm a long time Stephen King reader and general horror connoisseur but #HouseOfLeaves hits different lol.
