In the 2015 Paris Agreement, most countries agreed to try hard to limit global warming to below 1.5 degrees Celsius. Delay and inaction mean that goal is becoming harder to achieve by the day.

There is no route to limit to +1.5c, the article itself makes that clear; we are already breaching +1.5c and the temperatures go UP from here not down. Even droping to zero emissions today, temperatures'd continue to rise well past +1.5. IPCC's conservative models say we are tracking +3-4c by 2100
It is very unlikely that it's even a remote possibility at this point, according to accredited scientists and peer reviewed publications. We are, however, ready to act and have our considerable engineering muscle in a flexible position to start picking up geoengineering projects.
Psych friend said, “ You TRY, you lie.” The word “try” does not imply ANY commitment to actually achieve a goal, and instead permits very low involvement to equal “trying.”
1.5C is a threshold we will sprint past, globally.
If every nation ceased the burning of fossil fuels today, air/water temps would continue to rise for another 15-20 years, regardless of any direct measures taken to limit that increase.
No, 3 degrees is baked in now. The fun part? scientists over and over appear to have underestimated. I tend to agree with youtuber thunderf00t who is resigned to the fact real action won't begin until 2080 when people with money actually start to feel it.
We've been talking about cutting carbon emissions for decades. I think it's time we realize that's not happening and pivot to researching technologies to limit the scope of damage from climate change.
“Agreed to try hard”. That’s actually funny. To answer your headline, no, it’s not possible. We need to turn attention to mitigation, not prevention. Sucks, but let’s stop being delusional here.
And the fact that the GOP idiot took the USA out is criminal…: he rather make all the dirty money behind close doors with Musk and his cronies that we are left is the dust. Even tho that the working American is the one holding this country together. Stay focus America, we need to be proactive..💙💙
While we all have that expectation (me included), we don't really know this as a fact. We'd have to cease all industrialization for 50 years to gauge the impact on the environment... and that's not going to happen (not without modern society falling apart)
Our industrialization, and the pollution that comes with it, might just be coincidentally aligned with the earth still coming out of the last ice age. Doubtful, but impossible to prove.
I'm sorry, you seem to be in somewhat good faith, but nobody worth hearing is arguing that point. If you come across somebody who is, please do your best, but surfacing the point in response to nothing just validates it and gives it oxygen. It is not a valid argument and it does not deserve oxygen.
The vast majority of climate scientists have already looked into it. You don't need to cease all industrialization to be able to figure out why we have climate change. I'm not a climate scientist, but I tend to believe them when nearly all scientists are in agreement. Feel free to look it up.
Please understand that *I* agree with the science. Just as I agree with Evolution and Quantum theory. But they could all be wrong. That's the beauty of science IMO.
Regarding the environment, I don't think it actually matters. We need to fix what we can. Period. ASAP. Now! Arguments are not needed.
I get your point, but removing capitalism is removing the offenders... and I doubt baby steps are going to get us there in time, sadly. I am more of an "off with your head" sort of person. I am in my 40s and realised after 2008 didnt even make a dent in the system that it will never change willingly
You're in the US I take it? I live 3 hrs from the border with France, here things are in the preparation stages... your countrymen just need a few hundred years of neofeudalism... they'll catch up eventually.
Doomed by our own laziness (and/or stupidity). Nature doesn’t care. She can always start over. She’s got billions of years and she’s just not that in to human kind.
Well, isn’t trump withdrawing the US from the Paris Agreement once he gets in office? That might just make other countries also withdraw from the agreement… I hope not. But honestly it’s very sad that some people don’t think climate change is an actual threat. 🌍
Did ya not see who Trump has placed in charge of American Energy Policy?
Destroying our ozone for cheap gas. Earth's core is in reverse. Our Magnetic pole is rapidly moving to Siberia. Meanwhile we elect leaders who do not respect science. Clearly we are not prepared for whatever is coming. Why?
Setting aside for a moment the fact that world is still belching 50-ish billion tons of GHG into the atmosphere ever year, there is no feasible way to scale up any sort of the current processes to remove the cumulative 1,200+ billion tons that are already in the atmosphere.
money over long term. ppl r not willing to sacrifice. human animal @ the core r selfish. locusts- consume. look who they elected. a morally bankrupt person. ppl unaware fr propaganda of who caused inflation ( free money & shut down during Covid)
Perhaps y'all should have spent more time amplifying the pending climate disasters of trumps policies, but you choose to sanewash the insane. Remember you reap what you sow.
Not going to happen when we elect anti-science extremists and our media, including @npr.org, whitewashes their lies for them and normalizes the horrible or absolutely irresponsible things they say.
When the biggest nations in the world abandon the fight against climate change, the rest of the countries are putting themselves at a disadvantage with their carbon taxes.

Uh-huh. Sounds like my kid saying he’s going to clean his room.
“I’ll try hard, Dad. I promise!” 🤞

Aren't we near the middle at about 15*C?
With CO2 at very low levels of 0.04% instead of 2-3%, we're at the lowest end of that as well
Or is someone cherry picking data to sell some non-sense agenda?

Point was, we’re not Nature’s only game in town and probably not even her favorite. We’re nothing special….

Fail hard!
Keeping it under 3 degrees should be the next reasonable goal.
