The 29-year-old had last been seen in Budapest, Hungary. He said he was detained earlier this year after crossing into Syria on foot from Lebanon and held in prison until the fall of the Assad regime.

I expect this joyful story is playing out for thousands upon thousands of Syrians re-uniting (and helping to reconnect) family, friends, and loved ones who said or did the wrong thing and disappeared into a prison like this American.
They've been doing this shit for hundreds of years. Many of them died trying to convert tribes and anyone that they thought "needed Jesus." Insane indeed.
East Asians take it to collectivist extremes sometimes, but. I wish we'd adapt in our culture the mentality of "will my actions inconvenience others? Will it cause worry, anxiety, harm, resources?" I think a lot of potentially selfish bids for martyrdom and heroics would decrease significantly
