In Washington, D.C., a tax on residents earning more than $250,000 a year is boosting the wages of child care workers. Two years in, it's proving to be a great investment.

don't be fooled people! those aren't RICH people!
Those are successful workers! people like you and me, who have had more luck. The state is taking away their hard earned money to avoid taxing BILLIONAIRES
Yes, and we would gladly pay more for good things. Education, Firefighters, roads (yes the thing u drive on) disaster relief, schools, children's meals, LIBRARIES, clean water and...wait...handouts to corporations? What should we cut? hmm cant decide 🤔 jk you know what to do and how to vote
Bring back the upper end of the 1950s tax brackets, when a money made over $200,000 would be taxed at 91% (for a single filing, and adjusted to today's inflation, that'd be $2,400,000)
Currently rights are defined negatively. They describe what the government is not allowed to deprive you of, but I think rights should be defined positively as obligations that a society has to its people.
I love how fully half the comments in n this are how $250k a year isn’t a lot in DC. Rather than seeing the impact that increasing wages for the people who care for kids has, and cheering on more of that!
Remember that NPR was complicit in getting Trump elected back in 2016 and had been giving Republicans a free-pass on corruption for at least as long, all while holding Democrats to impossibly high standards.
They are not worth your support or viewership.
NPR lost it's way a long time ago.
My guess is that the Dems who stayed home in 2016 were not the group that unwinds to Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me or a Terry Gross interview. They’re the group that unwinds to a Ridiculousness marathon.
Naw he won’t they that passed and most really rich DOTN get salaries They get stock options and other perks and they make their money thru capital gains
Agree. Especially since inflation is biting everyone. The number of billionaires rises every year and so does the amount of wealth they hold. Their quality of life won’t suffer one bit and their taxed money will go much farther than ours will. IF they can figure out how not to squander it, that is.
Fair, I wasn’t factoring in the location so I’ll concede that. I still know plenty of folks in DC who’d be living a lot easier with 250k. Or 100, or 80k. But I’m just a child care worker so I’m far from even a 100k income
It's not much above it. People have just become accustomed to slave wages as the norm.
There are twenty-two MILLION millionaires in America. That's one in every fifteen people. These asshats have duped the public into thinking $250k is "rich" so they can have the upper middle shoulder the burden.
the federal minimum wage is sociopathically low, yes. but there is no place on earth where you couldn't live comfortably on $250k a year. that is, in fact, rich.
Shouldn't everyone live comfortably? Even slaves were provided food and housing. Modern-day slaves have to struggle for even that. People have become too accustomed to suffering as a way of life.
Idk where you getting your numbers, but 250k a year is the top 7%, unless I’m wrong?
I’d personally feel rich and be able to take vacations and indulge significantly more if I made even 80k a year
Plebs pointing their finger at other wage earners, jealous they are paid more, therefore they're "rich". High wage people busted their fucking ass for years and decades to get there.
Rich is your net worth increasing by 300 BILLION in four years. Folks need to know the difference.
I haven’t read the article but USUALLY taxes like this work by only taxing the amount of one’s income above that amount— if that makes sense. So if you make $300,000 the tax is only on $50,000 of your income.
Because for some reason it is never stated plainly in headlines…”a tax on income over $250,000 a year” isn’t that hard to write. It’s almost as if headlines want to pit people against people rather than just have it be about the math.
To whoever see this , I hope there are days when your coffee tastes like magic, your playlist makes you dance, strangers make you smile, and the night sky touches your soul. I hope you fall in love with being alive again.
For those saying 250k is not rich, you need to check how many people in the US make that much and stop comparing yourself to people in the top 1%. Those people have an insane chunk of the country’s wealth, far more than they will be able to spend in their lifetime.
You are deflecting. It's a common defense mechanism when someone is struggling to face the truth.
If you're hardcore CNN, etc, pointless discussion from here on. The BUREAUCRACY of government is destroying America. We are the pawns. And they want to divide and conquer.
Deflecting what? Defense mechanism against what? If I’m struggling with anything it’s dealing with stupidity. If I’m hardcore anything it’s anti-fascism.
They just like stringing buzzwords together. Someone yesterday said Kamala was a “fascist communist”. They don’t have a clue what they’re talking about.
I'm lower upper class and just crossed that barrier a few years ago. I don't have to work as hard as I did when I was lower middle class. I am perfectly fine with paying a little more in taxes in order to have a better, more equitable community.
There is ZERO reason why tax on annual incomes in excess of $250,000/year should not be less that’s 48.5%. That tax alone would fund free healthcare, free education AND the military budget.
Better yet, get rid of the program, give tax cuts to the wealthy and privatize ALL the childcare. I'll let you guess who might benefit from those contracts.
The bar is higher. they are taxed on everything above 250k so if they make 251k they are only being taxed higher at the additional 1 thousand.
If they make 1 million dollars the additional 750k is taxed
Good to know the tax is progressive. I was more being critical of the headline and sentiment in the replies that $250k households are being lumped in with millionaires and billionaires as "rich"
For those of you doing a quick Google search.I used to work there.$250k per year is not rich.I know it sounds like a lot.You forget people have to pay rent, electricity, water, internet, streaming service, student loans, car payment, insurance, gas, groceries, etc, all of which cost more in DC.
Man, I guess my household would be dirt poor there.
That's why when I tell ppl I'm from Virginia, I clarify...not THAT area of Virginia. Totally different world near DC.
The sustainability of increasing the employment pool is limited by the number of people being taxed.
The irony of that pool being attached in some way to Federal Contracting/Lobbying or are an SES 2 should be seen more as a transfer payment.
D.C. COLA is higher than avg, teachers are just surviving
LTC advocates have been working for years to convince the Mayor that this could/should be replicated for direct care workers. Modest legislation to raise wages was passed but it’s still not funded. The mayor doesn’t appear to see that the staffing shortage in LTC is a crisis for district residents.
I agree with this but I don't think the tax hikes should apply to people making less than $750k. My reasoning is that way fewer people will complain about them and you'll be taxing the people who really need to be taxed. People earning 5M+ should be taxed substantially more on a graded scale.
Crazy how asking the very well-off to pay their share of taxes can help. Totally nuts how that works.
Imagine actually asking billionaires to pay their fair share in taxes? Wow…..What a concept. Imagine what that could do?
I think I can speak for every Republican in Congress when I say that any form of tax on anyone earning even a measly $250,00 a year just to boost wages on child care workers - or any other demanding, low-wage job - is simply a non-starter, especially if it's "proving to be a great investment."
They’ll never know unless their accountants mention it.
I’m guessing there is some punishment in the GOP for reading NPR. Like they have to sit in the poorly ventilated section of the cigar lounge or are limited to bottom shelf Scotch.
Wait what?? If you increase taxes on people who make more, then the government has more money to do things with, like pay child care workers?? Huh. Who knew??
The US isn't broke, we've just allowed the wealthy individuals and corporations to buy their way into ever lower taxes, and then use the resulting national debt as an excuse to cut the social safety net even more.
I get this alot, but the truth is you can be a member of a party and disagree with some, of even most of their platform if it has moved away from what you believe.
I haven't voted republican in many years, but still consider myself a conservative.
I believe things that most conservatives used to believe.
For example, I believe we can have a balanced budget, while also protecting and growing the social safety net, primarily by properly taxing the people that can most afford it.
I believe in free markets, but I also believe that there are things that the free markets have proven unable to solve - such as healthcare for example (which is why I believe single-payer, universal healthcare is the only common-sense solution).
All earning $250,000 can afford to set aside a little for child care even if they do not have children.
Personally I think we should go further. Take tax nationwide.
All earning $250,000 annually pay 2.5% or $6,250 annually to provide day care in your area is a wise investment for conservatives who do not allow abortions.
Since no women have right to refuse giving birth anymore especially in Texas where no abortions allowed even if raped.

Crazy indeed.
If you make more than a million a year you should pay 45% at least.

Broadly: housing, food, water, healthcare, transportation.

i never said people can't be comfortable. 250k is far beyond comfort.

Most people don't understand this.
It’s hella better than regressive stuff like sales tax.
I like the Biden/Harris line of $400K.
And yes, it sounds like a great idea!
Each and every state will raise taxes, regardless of what you make, taxes are going 🆙 $$$$$$

Not sure what you’re on about.
Doesn't seem correct. Everyone should have some skin in the game. Don't punish those that have worked hard to get where they are.
Compared to the rest of the population that is rich.
If they make 1 million dollars the additional 750k is taxed

$250k - no change
$300k - $375 more
$400k - $1125 more
$500k - $1875 more
That doesn’t seem too crazy to me. Just my 2¢

Most billionaire wealth isn't from regular taxable income anyway.

If we’re gonna compare the UK to the US then DC itself is probably the most fair comparison, not the whole US.
Plus median should be used rather than mean, etc
London to compare with DC.
I'm not struggling, at all, but I'm by no means wealthy.
Raise that income.
Plus, inflation.
We need more of this.

Tax the rich, fix our problems.
Republicans are who keep voting to are give billionaires more tax breaks.
