A group of 18 state attorneys general signed on to a lawsuit filed Tuesday seeking to block the administration's move, describing it as unconstitutional.

In case anyone else was looking for the list of states, from AP "New Jersey and two cities [San Fran & DC], California, Massachusetts, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin."
If the democrats wanted to do something about this they would had. At this point I don’t know who’s worst, the democrats for giving people false hopes or the republicans for being straight with people and tell them that that’s not gonna happen.
Yeah, good luck with that. Mitch McConnell bent over backwards to get Trump appointed judges on benches. That is when he wasn’t freezing for three minutes or falling down or pushing himself around in a wheelchair #handmaidens #henchmen #MSMcomplicit
Seeking to unilaterally override the constitution on day 1. This tells you all you need to know about the MAGA movement’s respect for the foundations of American democracy.
Not to mention it’s an incoherent proposal on its face. If birthright doesn’t guarantee citizenship, then what exactly does?
Can we frame this not on terms of political parties but alignment with what our country stands for. One is pro democracy and one isn’t. When he’s working against the Constitution, let’s be clear, that’s anti-American. And we’re the majority.
He’s getting exactly what he wants. Start the legal process and eventually it ends up in the Supreme Court who will interpret the Constitution his way.
You report on the constitutionality/legal implications but I've yet to hear from any source the pros and cons of birthright citizenship. Take the legal implications away. Get experts to explain why birthright citizenship is good/bad for America, being as I understand, the only country to have it.
"describing it as unconstitutional"....Are you really trying to both sides the constitution? This is an order to violate the constitution, speak facts.
Holy fuck you people are getting annoying. There’s not a single headline that anyone can write at this point that will satisfy you. You sound like a pedantic whiner. Read the fucking article like an adult.
You live in a country where fake news is actually prohibited; while the U.S. turned it into a monopoly on media. NPR is one of the few surviving independent, the bar is expected to be high.
And you don’t want a “high bar”, it sounds like you want them to report what you want them to report, within the context you prefer, with headlines as long as the article, editorialization in news stories, and you want it all for free, all while bleating you want “unbiased news”.
Fake news is not prohibited in Canada. We do not have an equivalent to the Fairness doctrine or any laws beyond the typical slander and liable. We don’t have news on FB in Canada because of a commerce law around FB taking unequal revenue from websites they link to.
No, you’re pissed because every headline with Trump’s name in it doesn’t have a history lesson, a full breakdown of his criminal offences, and most of the article’s content in it. I’ve been watching this for years: step one is complain about headline, step two is to not read the article.
Okay, I know why these type of headlines piss me off, especially AFTER I read the article. But, you keep thinking you know me better than I know myself if it makes you feel superior. It's not my job to try and change you're mind.
I don’t feel superior, 15 years of social media has demonstrated to me that most people read headlines, bitch about them, and then don’t read the article. They don’t understand the purpose of a headline or who writes it. Then they whine about paywalls and ads and demand quality journalism for free.
NPR, you know it is unconstitutional. You have access to the constitution and can read it. Now, I will have to add another organization to my unreliable biased news list.
If their parents are here "unlawfully", then you're making a claim of jurisdiction--it applies--those parents aren't here as diplomats. If the parents are under the jurisdiction of the local authority, then so too are the children.
For anyone looking for a list: DC, New Jersey, California, Massachusetts, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin.
Futile. top1%/GOP atrocities enacted by dicktator twitler will quickly land in fascist SCOTUS that has repeatedly defied the US constitution to rule in support twitler, top1% & GOP fascism, to immunize twitler, to destroy democracy & bottom99%. AGs ought to be peacefully creating a new country now.
DC, New Jersey, California, Massachusetts, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin.
It doesn’t matter how we feel about it. Birthright / naturalized citizenship is enshrined in the constitution. This should be upheld by the courts unless amended.
The rule of law should be apolitical. I completely understand that in practice it’s not, but seeing AGs described as Democrat or Republican in a headline gives me the ick.
Funny as Trump used to profit from Russian Oligarchs sending their pregnant wives to Florida, staying at rented Trump condos to have their children so they could be American citizens before going back to Russia to be endocrinated

Birthright citizenship is a constitutionally guaranteed right.
Not to mention it’s an incoherent proposal on its face. If birthright doesn’t guarantee citizenship, then what exactly does?
I'm here for it.
(Fixed your headline for you!)
https://constitution.congress.gov/constitution/amendment-14/
It’s EXPLICITLY unconstitutional.
Even a strict constructionist like Scalia would have no argument to support this.
It’s that basic. There’s no “grey area” here. It’s not open to alternate interpretation.
Donald is just trying something illegal.
