After a federal judge ruled that Google had a monopoly on the search market, the tech giant and the government are in court to debate penalties. One possible result: forcing Google to spin off Chrome.

Exactly. Google has been pretty bad for a while now.
And don't even start on their AI stuff at the top, that is absolute useless rubbish that provides random info guessed & usually irrelevant & unrelated to the actual search you want.
Try PERPLEXITY. I think its good. It has a good free version. i use it often.I have checked the info it gives back by researching the answers & they resonate. It will keep your query in a library so you can revisit it. You can type query or dictate it.
Spinning of chrome would be wonderful, since google has been willing to use its dominance in web browsers to force its interests on everyone, ad blocking and manifest v3 for example
damn imagine waking up one day and Chrome is now “Bing Navigator” or something equally cursed 💀
Google’s like “fine take Chrome” while secretly building a new browser called Googlier that still tracks you blinking too fast.
Fuck penalties that don't hurt them.
Shut em down until they change their business model and end their monopolies!
There are other, more moral, search engines available out there.
Google was the only one ever gave me what I was looking for. Bing pushes every wrong answer first sometimes second or third page maybe Ifind it oft than not I just go google.
Google is such an evil company. Giving us amazing free maps – how dare they!! Oh, and free email – shame on them! And android software – which most of the world uses versus iPhones for half the cost – those bastards.
Meanwhile, Google donates millions to the White House Easter Egg Hunt? Buying favors? Why do educators use Google while these people are destroying the DoEd.
That would make little sense because it will only ever be associated with them in people's mindset anyway. However I've not used Google in years, having grown tired of the ever increasingly meaningless stab in the dark results it gave me.
Is chrome viable as a business without drastic changes? I’m under the impression it’s basically a cash sink on its own. It either gets scooped up by a google-sized corp and funded, or it has to monetize to survive, which means it’s dead.
Tbh, Google could've kept being the go-to if it would've: 1. Dumped the ads in search results. I want to know the name of a particular flower, not the biz listings of four florists that aren't even in my state; 2. Quit fucking tracking the shit out of everything, you greedy, creepy assholes.
It's possible that the regime will purchase the parts that fall off. I'm in between on this. It could be good or it could be bad. Every android phone uses google framework services and this economy does not make it affordable to purchase an iPhone for most people. This could be seriously bad.
I do, thanks! This lawsuit is specific to their being a divestiture of Chrome...hence why I said "do YouTube next." I don't use TikTok but most video content, especially long form, still goes through YouTube and there is really no alternative. Maybe Vimeo but...not really.
Uhhh
YouTube does not charge its creators to have videos on its site
Vimeo charges you to post videos, and has no monetization (you will never get paid to post videos on Vimeo)
So no, they are not “just like”
at some point the subjects of the big joke know it and live with it, then at some point they decide to make it all normal instead of freak out. But they still want to freak out.
We need a dancing revolution!
All hail the FREAKOUT !
Spinning off Chrome is no solution. Chrome has a ton of (better) competitors. Google should have to spin iff something tangible like YouTube or Google Cloud to be properly broken up.
They have a separate monopoly case going around their ad tech business. They also lost that case and will have to break that up separately from search. They're still appealing both I believe so we'll see how this goes.
Since iPhones don’t last past two years and my Safari has been gone for months, I have been using DuckDuckGo. It is OK but still limited. It takes time for the algorithms to build and that’s only when people use them.
I am still using an iphone 12, so no they don't all stop after two years. (I also use a laptop) I have not been disappointed in DDG and am a former librarian.
been with the duck for a couple months now. a lot has changed since i last tried them in '22, all good. i'd like their image search to be more robust but that's a slight thing in an otherwise speedy privacy-centric search motor.
I have not found that to be true. Google now dumps AI and ads and sponsored links at the top, you still have to wade through a lot of crap. I can always find what I am researching for on DDG. And my searches are private.
Why doesn't the government regulate,in the first place?!This is why the system now in place is not sustainable;bottom up economics is a dead end;Bernie's vision was void of process ,but theoretically probable; there is now a process; attenuate the economic model and the above will never be a problem
This is a stupid suit. Google has been declining for years. Spinning off a web browser changes their dominance in search? Come off it. What Google needs is a competent competitor.
Bad point. The thesis behind an anti-trust lawsuit is Google is engaging in market manipulation and stifling competition. Breaking them up would open up the field for other browsers.

they know it's open source
they do know it's open source, right
that's why literally every Chrome competitor is a badly forked Chrome but with (even more ads) and (probably cryptocurrency or NFTs or VPNs)
And don't even start on their AI stuff at the top, that is absolute useless rubbish that provides random info guessed & usually irrelevant & unrelated to the actual search you want.
Is so generic.

Goggle makes way too many assumptions to be useful to me.
I extracted it from all devices a few months ago.
Y'all let this happen, and then victimize and complain.
We could unite to stop it, right now.
But most want their comfort, and prison of "ownership" more.

Chrome is Google
Our luck, he’ll just sell chrome to Musk or Zuck suck 🤦🏻♀️
And that TikTok gets more views than YouTube?
YouTube does not charge its creators to have videos on its site
Vimeo charges you to post videos, and has no monetization (you will never get paid to post videos on Vimeo)

Sorry. You may now return to your regular programming.
