The 24 Hours of Lemons is an endurance race with a twist: The cars cost less than $500, and costumes are unlimited. A recent race saw a Toyota Yaris painted like a snail, and a team dressed as bees.

That's a 190 from the 80s. Small, 4 cylinder Benz not worth much now.
Also, the rules state that the net cost must be $500. So, buy an old, clapped out Mercedes 190 for $2K and sell the interior parts for $1500 and you're good.
When I was a Teen or so, I did drive one of the first Hyundai Excel. 4 on the floor, top speed probably 55 with a good wind behind you! LOL. I literally had the pedal to the metal maxing at 55 on hwy 80 in the Bay Area. You can go up the steepest hill in SF as long as some of your friends help push😂
There are tons of cars with blown head gaskets, flood damage, or bad wiring that you can pick up for under $500. Most of these teams are made up of or at least have a legit mechanic to fix them. Then they hide the budget via gift parts and bartering for beer.
I'd argue Mazda, they go forever, and the odd Datsun 180Y and Daihatsu, but to be honest I don't know what cars exist in the US, probably a completely different playing field.
Went and looked it up. That's an MX5, apparently. Wonder why they changed it to Miata for America? I expected a full body, not a convertible, anyhow. Pretty little thing.
