Going back to play an old game that you never played in the past can sometimes be absolutely brutal. Good for the time is *almost* always not good now, particularly when it comes to 5th and 6th gen games.

I had to have a good think about this but I agree. Whilst some genres fare much better, games that were especially in their technology infancy then are often quite jarring when played now, especially early 3d games.
I'm able to compartmentalize my perspective since I grew up during that era but if we looking at the Tomb Raider remasters from a modern perspective those games are straight up "broken"
I can deal with it but can't imagine kids now adays would be as forgiving
One of the things I only recently had a realization about was how the way that games recognize inputs on both a hardware and software level has improved
Old 3d platformers like Spyro don't exactly have super robust "stick input detection" or however you want to call it
Yeah, I think unfortunately a lot of games require a sort of "If you can get past xyz it's great" explainer nowadays. Nothing wrong with it, but it is kind of frustrating that some people act like the classics are flawless. i'm sorry old jrpgs not showing you equipment comparisons sucked ass etc
It was a launch title made by a ragtag group of developers in like six months who had recently split from Rare. TimeSplitters 2 is one of the best shooters ever made and holds up extremely well today.
Depends on the game. Some games age better than others.
Old Jrpgs stand up fine. Good platformers too...
...whereas almost all of the N64 jank has not aged well haha. Goldeneye, Operation Wingback, Quest 64 - those are ruff rides nowadays. You have to be really committed to even try them now.
Tried playing timesplitter 2 because it was on ps premium. Hadn't played it since it was on ps2. My god the controls were terrible. Especially with aiming. Don't know how I beat it back in the day. Had to stop after less than hrs.
Majority of Squaresoft titles found a way to work around the 3D limitations as well as get their art direction vision through. Parasite Eve, FF 7-9, FF Tactics, Brave Fencer Musashi, Bushido Blade, Vagrant Story...

This is one of them that if you didn’t play it back in the day, you’re likely not going to enjoy it now.
