I slept ~8 a day so I could be well rested/energized to work on our research and mentally engaged with my students

I said 'yes' to opportunities that brought me joy and made me excited for the future (like mentoring high school and undergraduate students)

But I also protected my time and sanity by saying 'no' to opportunities where I didn't believe my participation was necessary (like various administrative meetings) or I didn't have the bandwidth to do it well (like various service committees)

I said 'not now' for everything else in between to prevent myself from being spread too thin in the hopes that the opportunity would present again in the future (like various speaking engagements/conferences) and they often did!

I went on vacation (often hiking at various national parks) to step back from our research and give myself the time/space to reflect and stay grounded in the bigger picture
