Just a reminder that fascists, authoritarians, dictators of all stripes destroy archives— books, museums, databases, &c— because those things provide windows onto a plurality of other ways we might organize the world. And so preserving, defending, and spreading that knowledge harms those regimes.

Teaching citizens about science 🤝 Teaching students about being a citizen

It’s hard to focus on science or be expected to do work when the institution in the United States is collapsing before your very eyes 🫣 #SciSky 🧪 how are we doing today … 🥲

NEW: NSF confirmed that they fired 168 employees today, out of their staff of ~1,500 feds. This includes some people who'd finished their 1-year probationary periods, which were extended to 2-years last month without explanation. More to come.

I was pleased to attend a State Dinner, hosted by Pres. Macron, for participants of the AI Action Summit. It was an honor to be invited to deliver remarks at Elysee Palace on Three Fallacies in how we think about AI, now published @techpolicypress.bsky.social www.techpolicy.press/three-fallac...

Interpretation for the non-scientists: When faculty get NIH grants, the University gets some extra cash to make sure the research is supported. NIH just cut that $$ by a LOT. That means Unis are less likely to support research. Most research in the US is done at Unis, so... it's bad 🧪

I know students that will be affected by this decision 🥲 … Please share and circulate widely! I’m also tagging #SciSky 🧪 for greater visibility!

I followed the @listifications.app account a while ago and I got a notification today that I was blocked by a scientist I look up to in my field 🫠

Worried about losing access to US federal data that may go off-line, or already is? You’re not alone—but duplication isn’t the answer. Many ongoing efforts have already archived key datasets and many more are ongoing. Check out these existing resources and, if you can, support their work. 🧵

Ellen Weintraub, the commissioner and chair of the FEC, says she's received a letter from the White House trying to remove her. "There’s a legal way to replace FEC commissioners-this isn’t it."

Friends are looking for jobs. Collaborators are dropping off papers. Funds are being pulled away. But let’s just pretend everything is normal.

I don't know how to say this beyond standing up to authority is a muscle and some of you have never exercised it

All these bros conveniently forgetting that the U.S. government was instrumental in creating the Internet through NSF grants to universities and research hubs through the 80s and 90s.

i'll be blunt, if you are someone who is vocal about the ways that diversity efforts "divide the working class" but silent about the ways that *actual racism and discrimination* divide the working class, then i think you're just an opportunist

I usually reserve this account for my personal views; but today I want to represent my position as President of @asn-amnat.bsky.social to post a message that will shortly go out to the membership of the American Society of Naturalists from the ASN Executive Council

Are you a hashtag activist, or do you know if your state senator’s voicemail box is full?

I've been taking oral contraceptives daily for #Endometriosis since ~2014 ... But with everything happening right now, a part of me is debating talking to my doctor about switching to an IUD or implant despite finally doing well on my current treatment plan (norethindrone + orilissa daily) 🫠

⚠️ DO NOT TALK TO COPS if you're protesting! Also, cops CAN legally lie to you, so do not believe anything that they say and do not respond. ⚠️ Also, remember to mask and to not take photos containing anybody's faces to protect their identities! 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽

If you want a long, but very thorough, read on just how crazy dangerous the situation is with Elon, @brockm.bsky.social has laid it all out in a single article. Please read it. www.techdirt.com/2025/02/05/t...

1. I keep saying this, but it’s important to try to slow things down. It’s something that the Democrats really don’t get. You can win a war by losing every battle slowly.

At any rate, no I’m not going to read your substack content. I refuse to read content on a platform that allows the monetization of Nazi speech. End of story.

I feel like pointing out the “legitimate scientific use” of words like ‘bias’ and ‘systemic’ in basic science is missing the point. Culture, activism, and race are also scientific topics of interest. An assault on ANY of these terms is an assault on science as a whole.

if the president’s lackeys can functionally seize control of treasury funds and dismantle a congressionally-created agency without consequence, it’s not that it’s a constitutional crisis as much as it means the constitution is vapor.

The government censoring scientists is horrific. But what is even more horrific is that many non-government scientists and institutions are self-censoring themselves because they are scared of the government and losing funding. Authoritarianism wins when we comply in advance!

Currently visiting my parents for the week and there’s nothing like warm pandesal 🍞 in the morning for breakfast on a rainy day 🥹✨
