Just a reminder. The library is free to use. Free to check out books and DVDs. Free to take your kid to Story Time. Free to ask a question. Free to sit quietly for a minute. Or an hour. #supportyourlocallibrary

I used to love going to the library with my grandmother, she would always check me out a book to enjoy, I chose poorly and well beyond my reading level (I was 5,6,7,8,) but a lifetime of reading endured and I miss her a lot (I still have poor taste though)
And honestly, there is something about the browse factor of physical copies that can’t be matched by streaming…yes streaming is easier but looking for movies at the library is more fun than browsing a streaming app.
Check out Hoopla, too, if your library has access. Ebooks, audiobooks, movies, and British TV! If Hoopla has it, it's always available. No waitlists. You're just limited to 20 borrows a month, I think. It's not a huge catalog but I find quite a few titles every month.
I just got it yesterday. I read New Scientist this morning while I drank my coffee, instead of doom scrolling. So much better for my health.
I put an audio book on hold.
Got my library card reinstated…still had it from the late 80s. Took my 4th grade grandson over the holiday break and he loved it. Looked up a book on his phone, went to the librarian for help finding it and then sat in a comfy chair and read for awhile. We had a blast💕
I do want to add the asterisk that it is and it isn’t free in an important way. We need money to operate and we keep getting less of it via repeated budget cuts. If you see your library on a ballot measure please vote yes. If we are asking we are in dire straits. Same goes for parks depts & schools.
Some of my favourite childhood memories are of going to the local library with my dad. We usually went after work, half an hour before closing. In winter, we often exited into the sunset dancing through trees, each carrying a stack of the most gloriously musty books to disappear into.
i'm too disabled to go to the library this day since it requires a bus trip and a bit of walking, but i second that it's very good and i used to go a lot while in college cause it's so quiet and calm
Before the internet we used to call the library to ask a question. We were at work and a couple hours later the librarian would call us back with an answer. We didn’t abuse it.
I was just at a local library on Monday to take my son for his tutoring session. There were about 5 other tutoring sessions going on at the same time. It's wonderful to have such a nice safe space for that.
I LOVE the library!! Someplace to go that’s never going to pressure you to buy something. You can make friends, or sit quietly. You can LEARN! About anything you want! For FREE! Libraries are the closest thing to heaven on earth.
*It's not free everywhere (atleast the lending books in this instance). Here in NL it's free up to 18yo, but a card is pretty affordable afterwards at like 50 bucks a year to borrow up to 10 books local/online. But I 💯 support this message that the library is a great (free) resource for many things!
I bet we can monetize all that freenish. Free library admission for only $2 for adults and $5 for children, for example. Why are the little ones more, you ask? When do adults ever go to libraries? I kid, of course. Love libraries.

I wrote this as a reply to another comment. Check to see if your library has Hoopla, as well. Another free resource for ebooks, audiobooks, movies and TV, including some British TV from Acorn. https://hoopladigital.com
I recently got my library card after over a decade of using my Kendal and audiobooks. I was shocked at how much digital content including audiobooks they had. Very nice.
Yes!
It is free to take out resources when you sign up for a library card which you are entitled to as a resident. Library cards are also often available to employees of a town business.
I think our overly capitalized society has made most of us forget how absolutely amazing libraries are. When practically all forms of entertainment cost money (or have ads), it can be tough to remember that libraries are right there, free of charge, ad-free. They almost don't feel like a real thing.
I have used my library weekly for decades. Free internet, free restrooms and water fountains and great programs. I vote at my library and reserve whatever books I want so they are on the shelf waiting for me to run in and grab them. My library is the very best "Socialist" safe place
And the supplemental things they provide as well. Kanop app for streaming, mango app for language learning. Not available at all libraries but you can always look to see if yours has it
