Humans read every day without picking up a book. On signs, on billboards, in the paper, on phone notifications. Being able to read is being able to understand any and all text, and many cannot. Books aren’t even the main aspect.
I am sorry that it would sound elitist.
Beating able to read, especially from an early age, is a wonderful thing.
I believe that teaching kids to read makes the world a healthier place.
Between literacy education, and feeding everyone in school, we could solve 40% of childhood behavioral problems.
I’m glad I can read too, I live in rural Missouri and idk if it’s the quality of our schools or what but a lot of ppl I meet through work are functionally illiterate and I can’t imagine what it would be like to try to work without reading anything
It's not elitist at all; elitism would be not wanting others to read
There's a trick that's been pulled where elitism is framed as simply having education or having luxurious tastes. But elitism is actually support for social stratification and entrenched hierarchy. Republicans are the elitists.
