I think the rounded edges are supposed to make it feel more "friendly" and less intimidating. It's a common design trend nowadays.

As I remember it, ms-dos ripped off cp/m.
Now gentle reader, please forgive the errors that age brings but the saying was:

32bit windoze based on an 8 bit o/s , copied by a 2 bit company

That basic(ly) it. Seattle Computer "borrowed" some of CP/M as QDOS, then MS saw an opportunity and "borrowed" QDOS when DR balked at IBM's terms.

These "borrows" are different though.
SCP *cloned* CP/M, but for an architecture that CP/M didn't support (x86) using MS's storage format
MS *licensed* 86-DOS when DR dropped the ball, only then to re-license it to IBM.

At least with XP, I could put the taskbar at the top of the screen where it belongs, and where I've had it since OS/2, and 3.1 & 95.
