Mid 16th C Latin paeninsula, from paene ‘almost’ + insula ‘island’.
The word "penis" is taken from the Latin word for "tail". Some derive that from Indo-European *pesnis, and the Greek word πέος = "penis" from Indo-European *pesos.
For the curious, the actual etymology is from a word originally meaning "tail." Nobody in history seems to have ever been able to call it by anything but a euphemism.
