something pretty on the nose that the only big legislative victory of kier starmer’s labour is, in even it’s most utopic framing, ‘a comfortable death’

It is Neo-Malthusian, though. The biggest threat to humanity is the lack of dead humans. Assisted suicide and legal abortion are preferable to death by starvation. The problem is that stupid people are thinking, and it's dangerous to let stupid people have stupid thoughts
the current british welfare state is already functionally a privatised system of social murder against the poor and disabled. this isn’t conjecture, even the united nations called out the uk’s benefit system for human rights abuses in 2016 and it’s only got more cruel since
So fucking dystopic
And yes, unless you take a specific interest, you will not know what the death toll of Austerity has been, or realise what happened during the lockdowns, or what this bill means to at risk people. This should be much more prominent in the whole debate
hearing people discuss assisted dying as this platonic concept of bodily autonomy and dignity has made me feel actually crazy. its not a high minded philosophical debate it’s a material law in the real world. the same state that can’t care for its sick now says it’s legal and ethical to kill them
i would recommend reading what happened with maid in canada and the gulf between this hypothetical and the reality of the situation, what happens when legalised and systematic death is introduced to an underfunded and privatised neoliberal medical system
I’m Canadian. My husband chose MAiD. I’ve seen all the data on the program & read the relevant reports/reviews. Abuse of MAiD is exceedingly rare. Abuses are dealt with promptly & harshly. We do not have privatized health care. We have universal health care. It has problems but is not under-funded.
on twitter so so many socialists and progressives are having such a difficult time comprehending this for some reason and any refutation about it being used against poor and depressed and disabled people are just fringe cases no need to worry
which is yea some people are gonna die so what like do these people for some reason forget the system we live under look at things like hospice in america it sounds like a nice concept but its literally all fraud for people who aren’t dying our systems are inherently corrupt
just something to absolutely bleed people dry and put them in poverty i mean we have prison labor a major approved talking point in politics is wanting all homeless people exterminated but your crazy if you think maid will be used for nefarious reasons by the state
surely in america where things are completely made up of various frauds and scams and a complete sociopathic apathy to life surely no funny business will happen a country that sees israel and goes this is normal and good should pass assisted dying

...the state should criminalize the act, & force a suicidal person to continue to live a life of misery against their will..?
Trying to engage in good faith, & I have PDD, so it's not philosophical for me.
my home country voted to legalize assisted dying but not marijuana
in what moral framework is suicide more agreeable than weed?
