I know many young women who’d love to be able to have a family or a larger family but how can they afford to house, feed, care for them? Let alone the effect on career, earnings, health, and workload. And look at the world you’d bring those kids into, loaded with debt, division and climate disaster.
In France there used to be community awards for 4 or more children, not sure if that's still the case. I remember quite a few families with 6 children, not so common in the UK at the time;
Awards... also long maternity leave, substantial maternity pay, well-funded pre-school... all kinda joined up. Also, of course, Catholicism something of a "default" religion through the 20th century.
Yes, I believe they also had free health and dental care for children under 18, can't remember all the details, it's quite a while ago since I lived in France.
The awards (there's several, all funded by private endowments) are still available but a bigger benefit these days is discounted access to public transport and some other services for the "familles nombreuses"
Oh, I didn't know they still did that, but anyway, it's not forced on those women in quite the same way as the original post is talking about. Although for very trad Catholic wives you could argue that maybe it is.
They still do it, just like they give tax breaks and extra pension allowance for big families, but you're right they don't push this as national policy any more.
