I live in Pennsylvania and outside of the largish cities and their satellite towns, there's a ton of rural communities that simply have no reason to exist and simply couldn't if the fed wasn't dumping cash into them

Like, my whole life both parties have *wholly* embraced the fundamentally anti-government stance of Reagan. Even politicians who wanted more government programs treated it as a "necessary evil" rather than a fundamental force for the good of constituents.

It’s a pretty small county in the middle of nowhere. It’s basically one farming valley with one real town and a few hamlets. It also includes the mountains around the valley which are mostly state parkland or set aside for logging. Past that it’s just miles of desert or more mountains.

This is La Grand Oregon, county seat and largest “city” in Union county. About 14,000 people live there and its biggest attraction is a small state college.

They recently passed an impotent symbolic measure to say they would prefer to be part of Idaho.

ain't NOTHIN in union county. 3 ghost towns. maybe like 6 ranchers and one guy from the soil and water bureau helping them. there's a town called La Grande that, like, technically exists. there's a hot springs resort i actually kind of want to go to. red since 1968
