Along with the Star Wars soundtrack poster I had this one on my wall.
I also participated in the stadium scene for the movie!
Berkey was terrific. He painted as if JMW Turner and Sid Mead had a baby.
As a kid I felt gypped by that poster as we never got to see Kong with a foot on each tower, but now I notice that Kong’s actually leaping across the gap. I forgive John Berkey!
In all fairness, I’m sure he was just working from publicity stills and hadn’t seen the film himself. They probably just said “make him on top of the WTC with fighters coming after him” and Berkey said “Cool, will do!”
Absolutely - probably not even stills, just images from art dept. That would also explain the plethora of Falcons in the Star Wars image and the slightly "off model" X-Wings :-)
I haven't seen the 76 Kong since its original release - the moment when he wallops the Huey stuck with me, a real sense of weight and power in that shot. At least that's the way it seemed to 10 year old me at the time.
i have a fairly extensive King Kong 76 collection collection. First movie i saw in the theatre. The blu ray that was released a few years back that includes the 3 hour tv cut is worth picking up. Also i believe the star wars poster was included in the star wars soundtrack album ?
I need to revisit that 3 hr. tv cut! Watched it only once as a kid. My son bought the film on Apple in 4K but I believe it only has the theatrical edition.
