“But I do know that art — in my own case the art of poetry — means nothing if it simply decorates the dinner table of power which holds it hostage”
-Adrienne Rich
Yup, kind of already on it.
I write about the human conditions and humanity as a whole and some of the stuff I write, just tell it as it is.
No doubt, some people do not like, that is okay.
However, you do not get to take away my first amendment, just because you do not like what you read or hear!
In fact, the founders left England and many other countries for this and many other freedoms.
This is even happening today.
Freedom of speech = discussions and dialogues = new perspectives
I seriously thought this would happen the first time. I really thought that punk rock and anti-authoritarian music would rise up like a phoenix to burn down the façade and expose the cronyism and the oligarchy… Deeply disappointed and don’t anticipate “dangerous” art. We’ve failed ourselves.
Some of us will go the other way, and make peaceful art, soft art, art you can retreat into when the world gets violent and miserable. An oasis of sorts. There will be room and need for all kinds of art these next four years 💜
Under authoritarian rule anything that goes against the regime is forbidden. Soft, peaceful art is valuable. It nourishes the soul. It provides solace, humanity and worst of all — hope. I can’t think of anything more dangerous. Welcome. 🫡 🧑🎨 🖼️
Like say, a 1:1 model of a working guillotine that slices cantaloupes with the names of certain billionaires and politicians written in black sharpie on them?
I’ve been trying to get De Beers to kill me for years. Sometimes I feel like they’re going to do it, but a lot of the time I feel like their hearts just not even in it.
Agree 💯 with the sentiment. Serious Q tho: In such a maximally fragmented culture, what type of art can have real impact beyond a niche audience? In the 60s, with limited media outlets, something had a chance to break through. Today? On less than a Star Wars budget? 🤷♂️
Not just more outlets but more art (or content). Tools are so much more accessible. Everyone has a 4K camera in their pocket. Breaking thru is hard. Until you break through. Then it gets harder. You gotta be ready with more. Right away. And then you gotta keep producing. More. Fast. Good. Or poof 💨
All art of merit is revolutionary. It can hold the seeds of hope needed to keep a vision alive in the face of destruction, mourn what is lost, or inform to keep the resistance alive. Each of these are vital. Each instruct. Each force love to move to the realm of rage. From the pattern of braids 🧵
To the words on the page. Subversive? Overt? It is all vital. Hold fast. Create. Defy at every opportunity. Know that you are a part of something greater than yourself yet essential in each element. This is humanity opposing the wendigo, comfortable in their halls only for as long as we allow it.
Oh , I plan on it. Gonna even learn some new ways to be subversive with new mediums...and some old ones.. posters and stickers in all kinds of places..
Art appears to be our only option right now. In the face of all powerful authoritarianism, our most effective weapon is showing our humanity through creativity. We must force those who disagree with us to see us as human beings deserving of respect and love. We must make them appreciate us.
