TV and radio unfortunately still treat "the papers" as representative even though they have a shrinking, ageing, more militant readership and huge financial incentives to promote American style culture war topics, therefore giving a vastly distorted view of what the public cares about

Isn’t the media dedicated to clicks and the consequences of click baiting is the prominence of content that makes us more fearful and hateful? Ie the outcome is not really intended, though they obviously also don’t care.

I don't doubt these people have agendas and they matter, but is not at least a little conspiratorial to think they could skew the system in the way it has through their intentions, rather that the social propensities created opportunities (or affordances) that were easier to occupy by such people?
