I know anti AI sentiment can be hyperbolic but maybe it wouldn't be if people we have no reason to trust weren't ramming the technology down our throats at top speed in order to justify their VC investment. Not the internet but around the same time. I worked in publishing and I was told (tactfully) by my then boss on my return from maternity leave, prior to which everything had been paper-based, that I now had to learn "desktop publishing" or I'd be out of a job.

Absolutely.

I can totally understand people thinking it is a scam because so many of the people hyping it are behaving exactly like scammers.

Also they keep trying to do awful things with it, things which are morally questionable and often just a bit shit.

I suspect none of these AI companies are going to end up making any money anyway and they have started realising this, hence the panic. There is no obvious business model or moat. It's going to be ubiquitous, but unprofitable.

We have the standard Windows lock screens at work and there's always an ad for AI ("CoPilot and AI agents are helping people do more each day at work in just a fraction of the time") but never any detail or link to a case study. It feels like a product in search of a market.

It has some limited uses that are genuinely productive, but I suspect most of the time it is abused, misused, or used as a toy. From what I can see, it's starting to look unlikely it will ever be effective enough to justify the cost.
