I’m also encouraged by the Governor’s proposed reorganization to create a new Housing & Homelessness Agency. It will help ensure more accountability and enhance our ability ro resource communities better who are trying to build housing.

Finally, I’m heartened to see a critical keyword highlighted dozens of times throughout the budget: affordability.

This word needs to be top of mind for all of us this year. As Approps chair, I will view every bill that comes through my committee with an affordability lens.

While I’m encouraged by this range of commitments, I’m also concerned that there are no general fund dollars allocated for affordable housing. After years of meaningful investments, proposed funding in this budget has dropped to the minimum levels required by law.

I also know this is the beginning of the process, & will continue to advocate for restored general fund dollars in the final budget. The housing bond I’m reintroducing will provide critical funding for affordable housing - but that money won’t be available until 2027.

Overall, I commend the Governor for presenting a balanced budget under challenging circumstances. I look forward to working closely w/him & my colleagues in the months ahead to strengthen this proposal, & ensure we meet the urgent needs of Californians.

While usually supportive of your efforts, I have to take this opportunity to ask why you continually support increased bridge tolls. That doesn’t fit my definition of affordability.
